What does WINNING really mean…

If you don’t know Rob Johnson from Eventvue then you need to reach out and get to know him and his amazing organization. Rob’s startup just won “CSIA Rookie of the Year” a few months… and… as you can imagine, Rob is pretty insightful.

On my last post about “EGO Blows”… Rob had the following comment that I uncovered about 3:30 yesterday morning. Here is his comment:

“Hey Daniel – how do you reconcile Tim Connor’s point no. 6 (Business is not about winning or looking good but serving others well) with your DEW on Winning essay? They seem (to me at least) to be somewhat in conflict. And I think that today’s flattened world where it’s easy for anyone to have a voice favors Tim’s argument. What do you think?”

Kudos, Rob! That is great insight. So then…

What Does WINNING really mean?

I believe that WINNING is a state of mind! OK. Does that sound like a cop-out answer?

Maybe.

Let me explain further…

WINNING has to be a philosophy rather than ONLY a result…

In other words, being a WINNER doesn’t mean you never lose, fail, or suffer a “set back”… That’s not realistic. WINNING means you are dedicated to your goal and determined to see it through to the end regardless of the temporal encumbrances that create distractions in your quest for victory.

WINNING requires a fight and a value worth fighting for…

You can’t win if you aren’t fighting against someone or something else. The struggle is symptomatic of the process toward winning… Tom Friedman made the case (and I hold onto his philosophy with every fiber of my being) that a persons passion and curiosity would trump stand-alone intellect… (there’s more to explore here when I have more time…)

WINNING requires the humility to admit personal weakness…

Since WINNING is a philosophy (a process rather a singular instance), a WINNER has to constantly soul-search for ways to better himself toward the ultimate end-equity of “WINNING”. That require the humility and flexibility to self-correct and harness past failures in the mindset that WINNING is more important than appearing to be “right”.

CONCLUSION: If you are looking to “appear” like a winner (in the traditional sense of the word) you will most like likely not end a true WINNER. The humility that accompanies dedication to a cause and a client is inherent mandated by the philosophy of WINNING…
