High Performance Patience.

The cosmos doesn’t keep the same time as you do.

Your schedules are nice but not pressing.  Your deadlines are ambitious yet ironic.  Your demands are legitimate but limited by experience and time.

Sometimes high performance demands ninja-like focus on the art of being patient.

(something I admittedly do not do so well)

A lot of times our take on patience is like the story of the monk.

“There was a monk who struggled to be patient.  The more he tried, the less he was able to attain patience.  Deciding that he needed to separate himself from all distractions, the monk ventured far into the woods where he built himself a hut to live and meditate.

Quite a few years later, a man was traveling in the woods and stumbled upon the hut.  Astonished that anyone could live so far from the rest of the world, the man asked the monk why he was there all alone.  ‘To learn to be patient’, answered the monk.

‘How long have you been here then’, asked the man.  To which the monk replied, ‘Seventeen years.’

The man asked further,” But if there is no one around to bother you, how will you know that you are patient?’

Annoyed, the monk replied, “Get away from me, I have no time for you.’”

We don’t make time to practice patience — let alone high performance patience.

Most of us think that patience is the same as “waiting” or “doing nothing”.  And as a high achiever inactivity is your kryptonite.  It’s not only annoying, it makes you do that thing where you throw up a little in the back of you mouth.  You know what I’m talking about….

High performance patience is not about doing nothing.  It’s not about stopping and doing nothing.

It’s about knowing what is most important and carefully removing your emotional bias from your activity.

P = Positioning
A = all
T = the
I = intangible and
E = emotional
N = nuances
C = correctly
E = every time…

Practice high performance.  Practice patience.

Get better at positioning the intangible and highly emotional factors in any deal.

You’ll find yourself acting what seems to be a little more slowly.

It’s actually a lot faster to keep moving forward rather than taking 3 steps back every other week.

    Great advice, Dan.It reminds of a quote I once posted on my desk."Nothing is as important as it seems when you're thinking about it." Daniel Kahneman – Nobel Laureate in EconomicsThanks for the insight!Ben
