What To Do When You Don’t Know.
Making bad decisions can quickly cripple your business.
Spending too much money too quickly or running after new ideas without all the facts can quickly produce a sad and sudden end to the best of business ideas.
So as a leader, you are told that we need to consider all the options. That you need to think twice before making big decisions.
And not just the big decisions.
We’re told that even the small decisions need to be analyzed, contrasted, and given agonizing attention.
But despite our fascination with avoiding failure and choosing the right option, even the best of ideas don’t always seem to work out. Which we seem to realize poignantly in all the most uncomfortable of ways.
Great decisions can go bad. Sometimes bad decisions aren’t all that bad after all.
So in place of all the anguish and confusion around making good decisions, we’ve decided to pursue a different strategy. An approach that creates no decision at all.
When we don’t know what to do, we just decide not to do anything at all.
To not make a decision.
And our logic seems justified. After all, even if we get it right, it might not stay that way for long.
So why make a choice that might never be right?
But this “doing nothing” decision-making process creates a different set of problems. Problems with even more damaging consequences.
Doing nothing means we achieve nothing. Instead of making hard decisions and learning how to adapt and focus, we get good at avoiding the blame and being passive aggressive.
But it doesn’t look that bad.
At first, not making decisions seems like battle-worthy advice. Some would even tell us to “think about it” and “not do anything too quickly”.
And at first, not doing anything looks like the most brilliant decision of all.
But it’s the beginning of a fast and steady decline.
Failure leads to more failure. Fear leads to more fear. Helplessness leads some more helplessness.
We create the disaster that we’re trying to run from.
So what can you do?
- You make the best decision possible (given what you know at the time). — You take everything you know at the time and turn it into a plan of action. It’s not the only decision you’ll ever make. It’s just the one you are making right now. Stop deciding your future. Decide your “right now”.
- You put in the effort to execute behind the decision you just made. — You stop hedging your bets and invest in your own success. It’s easy to say that a decision was bad. Maybe what’s missing is the dedication and determination to give your decision a chance to be amazing.
- You adapt and adjust based on the results from your decision. — You stay honest and motivated. If you’re doing everything that you can do and it’s still not working then you might want to make a new “best decision possible”. It’s scary to pivot, but not doing anything isn’t an option.
When you don’t know, you just do.
You don’t stop, you start.
It’s not recklessness, it’s passion. It’s purpose.
It’s what you really need to be successful.
