It’s not good enough to care about what you do.
Being passionate will help you overcome a lot of the obstacles in your way. But it also creates another problems for you.
You become a jerk.
You’re so busy talking about all the things that you care about that you never stop to listen to the people that you are trying to help.
And you come off as thoughtless and insensitive.
Despite the best of your plans and intentions when you aren’t listening you can do more harm then good.
But listening takes work.
Because it doesn’t just require you to use your ears.
You need to use your ears, your eyes, and your body.
Think about how you like to be treated. You want the people you’re talking with to be looking at you. Nodding their head from time. Some eye contact.
It lets you know that you’re not just talking to yourself. That someone else is listening.
But that’s only the beginning.
Most of what is said is never heard. That’s because it is never said out loud.
It’s either inferred, ignored, or avoided.
You have to listen to the soul to find out what matters.
Which means you have to care. You have to assume that people are in a lot more pain than they are letting you know.
It’s starts with what’s not there.
What you aren’t being told. What you don’t hear.
To hear you can’t push your agenda. You can’t keep telling your story,
You have to listen for the sounds of the soul.
Chances are you’ll be surprised by what you hear.
