You Can’t Always Get What You Want Right Now.

You can’t always get what you want right now.

Whether it is a pay raise, closing the biggest deal of your life, or just having your boss agree with you — sometimes you can’t have what you want when you want it.

So you have to decide what is most important.

You can either compromise your position so that you walk away with something or wait it out until you get everything that you want.

Depending on the circumstances  neither decision is a bad one. But the results are dramatically different.

You can’t compromise right now, but hold out for everything you want later. You have to choose one or the other.

Which is important to remember when the stress of a situation starts to get inside your head. You can wait and fight another day, or get what you can get right now.

It’s a choice between a good decision and a better decision.

Most of the time, honesty with yourself is the best clue for figuring out which decision to make.

If you don’t have the internal strength to keep fighting, then you should try to get what you can get right now. But if you can tough it out, it makes more sense to walk away from the table and refocus your efforts on winning big.

That decision mostly comes down to how well you know yourself. Sometimes a good decision can be trumped by a better decision.

Just be aware of the options.

And remember that if you can’t always get what you want right now you can still get something.

Sometimes that is a pretty big deal all by itself.

    Wanna hear a “hold out for the BIG deal” story?

    Once upon a time, I was selling a WHOLE NEW PRODUCT for my company.

    i was selling to a BIG TIME prospect.

    We had never sold this product.

    I was CLEAR that the price we were offering was LOW – but THEY were trying to put the screws to us…they offered 50% price. They had their whole procurement team on the job to negotiate us down.

    My manager was going crazy. He said … “Let’s take it!” (He thought the 50% price was pretty good).

    I said “Give me a week”. (He did)

    End of story: They bought for full asking price! (And, in my mind, they got a deal!)

    STAND and WAIT. (and go after other business while you’re doing it.)
