A common question I get asked: How can I maximize my return on technology investments? Our industry is unique in that multiple solutions exist for each aspect of the business, and frequently these solutions do not integrate effectively with one another. This challenge puts the burden on customers to navigate and make sense of disparate systems, as many providers focus on promoting their individual products instead of their functionality within the overall business framework. To answer this question, it is essential to highlight four common mistakes customers often make when selecting suitable technology. Mistake 1: Avoid purchasing a tech solution that addresses only one specific challenge without considering its broader impact on the organization and workflow. It is critical to assess whether it truly contributes to improved results overall. ROI should reflect both the direct and indirect impacts and associated costs. Mistake 2: Decision-makers are often not the end-users or experts of the technology! Always involve those who thoroughly understand your business needs, how the technology integrates, and how to maximize its potential. Mistake 3: Don't be intimidated by the technical fancy words used by software companies. Don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as you need; they should be able to address all your concerns in simple terms and focus on your requirements rather than just promoting their solution's features. Mistake 4: Many hotels lack a comprehensive selection and implementation process. This process should include: identifying hotel requirements, researching available solutions, evaluating integration capabilities, conducting compatibility assessments, analysing costs and return on investment, planning for implementation, integrating with existing workflows, and conducting post-implementation reviews. This detailed approach is essential for achieving maximum return on your investment. While this process can feel tedious and challenging for already stretched teams, it remains a critical step whether done internally or outsourced. Avoiding these mistakes is in my view how hotels can effectively integrate their business into the modern landscape and improve the overall performance as a result.
