Doing hard things isn’t about getting lucky, thinking smarter than everyone else around you, or masterminding the perfect plan. It’s about putting yourself in the uncomfortable situation where you are forced to deliver super human performance.
You wouldn’t naturally jump off the edge of cliff and scramble to climb your way back up to safety. You wouldn’t purposefully chance your life on the challenge that you are strong enough to rise to the occasion.
So you stay away from the edge. You play it safe.
And miss out on the opportunity to test the limits of your greatness. Instead of building new muscles, developing new skills, perfecting new mastery, and winning new challenges, you talk yourself into mediocrity. You get in your own way.
To be better you have to put yourself in the scary position where failure seems likely. You have to find situations that are riskier than you normally would allow. Battle with competitors that are stronger, faster and sometimes smarter.
It’s not as scary as you might thing:
- Take the first step. — Don’t try to solve the whole problem, just take the first tiny step forward.
- If it scares you, try. — You’ll unteach yourself to stop backing away from uncertainty and fear.
- Fail with your head up. — When things go wrong be proud that you did what you could when others backed away.
- Try again soon. Harder. — You might be up to the task if you put in more effort, passion, and risk.
- Be a bit more honest. — Lying is easier than trying. If you get good at one, you will keep failing at the other.
- Heal your body, mind, and wallet. — It’s hard to live powerfully when you aren’t making smart decisions.
Push yourself off the edge. Build your wings on the way down.
The air driving through your lungs will fuel your creativity. You’ll figure out whatever you need to know.
And when you land — and what you feared most is only a distance dream — you will be stronger from the struggle.
Powerful. Enlightened. Motivated. And a bit more impressed by your own capacity to do great things.
