Stop Hiding The Bar. Raise It.

To be better at any skill you need to measure how well you’re doing right now. To improve, there has to be a bar to aim for. A goal. A target. Whatever you call “being the best you can be”, you have to know what you want to achieve and what you’re willing to do to get there.

How you frame that target usually indicates the results you can expect to get.

You have to know what you’re aiming for.

Instead of setting the bar at the goal of “wanting to lose weight”, you’ll always lose more weight if your goal is a specific number of pounds you wish to lose and a plan for eating better.

Instead of setting the bar at “being more active”, you’ll find yourself being more active if you specify what programs at your local gym you are going to start attending each week.

Instead of setting the bar at “making more money this year”, you’ll end up with more money if you define how much you want to make and what you’re going to do in order to make that money.

You have to know what you’re aiming for.

If you set your goal in the middle of uncertainty then you’ll never be quite sure when you’re achieving your goals.

But if you set the bar clearly — knowing not just what but how and when — then you’ll find yourself more focused (and effective) in achieving your goal.

You’ll find yourself getting there a little bit faster then you thought possible.

This isn’t just true for personal goals, it’s wildly important for business growth. Defying expectations and adopting a plan is crucial if you expect to end up achieving your goal.

You have to know what you’re aiming for.

Like any other competitive event, it’s hard to know if your winning without knowing what the rules of the game are.

Stop hiding the bar. Raise it.
