Why set goals if you’re not really committed to achieving them?
Why complain about life if you’re not willing to try to fix it?
Why set resolutions if you’re not willing to change?
Why get started if you’re not willing to finish?
Why compete if you’re not willing to do what it takes to be your best?
Why give to others if your heart’s not in it?
Why go through the motions if they’re not getting you closer to where you want to be?
Why have friends if you’re not willing to be a good friend back?
Why notice what needs to be changed if that’s all you’re going to do about it?
Why pretend like you care when you don’t?
Why ask for feedback if you’re not interested in getting better?
Why make a promise if you’re not willing to do what it takes to keep it?
Why complain about not getting results if you won’t do the hard things?
Why worry about outcomes if you’re not willing to learn and grow from your results?
Why be something that you don’t want to be?
Why not just care and love and give and strive, take failure on the chin and get back up swinging.
Think honestly about how you have spent your time over the last few days. Think back to the last week, the last month, and the years beyond that. Why are you doing what you are doing?
If you’re being honest, you might admit that some of what you do doesn’t make sense. Your actions and attitude are not aligned with where you want your life to go.
You talk about values like hard work and honesty, but you don’t make them a priority, which is a giant warning sign that you are desperately in danger of living a life that is miserable and stuck.
You are doing things that you think people at your work or your church or your family or any other community that you value tell you that you should be doing.
And it just doesn’t make sense.
It’s half-hearted and half-assed and not the least bit fulfilling. But you do it anyways so that you don’t make other people unhappy. So you don’t ruffle any feathers. So you don’t cause a scene, stand out, or experience humiliation.
“YOU WANT TO FIT IN AND BE LIKED. SO YOU’RE WILLING TO SACRIFICE YOUR DESTINY FOR A FEW MINUTES OF PUBLIC PRAISE. FOR A SLAP ON THE BACK AND A FIST BUMP FROM SOMEBODY WHO DOESN’T REALLY EVEN MEAN IT. THINK ABOUT THE CRAZINESS OF THAT FOR A MOMENT. YOU’RE LIVING YOUR LIFE FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T EVEN REALLY CARE ABOUT YOU.”
So maybe it’s time to ask yourself why.
Why are you doing what you’re doing?
Why are you where you are right now?
What if you were committed to doing less of the stuff that you’re only doing to make other people happy and more of the stuff that get you closer to where you want to be?
Maybe the next time you take a look inside yourself you won’t be so far off course.
You’ll be right on track, getting closer each moment to where you want to be.
