When you think about momentum you probably immediately think about what you should be doing.

What you should be learning. What you should be strategizing. Where you need to go and who you need to meet and the change you need to work on that will drive the most benefit.

But a big part of momentum has nothing to do with what you do. In fact, it has everything to do with what you don’t do.

The people you don’t hang around with. The places you don’t go. The plan you never start working on. That idea you don’t chase, even though you really want to.

Being busy isn’t the same as maintaining momentum.

Just because you’re putting in a lot of hours, doing a lot of things, doesn’t mean that every day you’re getting closer to where you want to be.

Being busy is deceiving. It fools you into thinking that you’re making progress. And maybe you are.

But just because you’re tired doesn’t mean that you’ve been working on the right thing. And it doesn’t limit the damaging impact of negative people.

Which is why a powerful part of maintaining momentum is what you don’t do — the people you don’t allow yourself to hang around. To be around. To talk with. To overhear.


They will rob you of your confidence, steal your joy, and convince you that bold moves are for everyone else but you. They will break your spirit and convince you that chasing something easy, fast, and guaranteed is a better option for you.

Which is why not being around them is about the smartest thing you can do.

You’re not tough enough to counteract their negativity, so don’t even try.

You won’t bring them up. They’re guaranteed to bring you down.

So protect your momentum by avoiding the one big thing that’s guaranteed to rob you of your destiny, being around negative people.
